The world of vintage watches is as fascinating as it is complex. One of the most frequent questions among collectors and first-time buyers is how to tell an authentic watch from a fake. Although experience counts for a lot, there are clear signs that will help you avoid making a mistake.
The first thing to look at is the brand name and logo. On original watches, the engravings are usually clean and defined, while on imitations they may be blurred or poorly finished. In addition, many antique watches have the serial number engraved on the back of the case, which will allow you to verify their authenticity.
Another important aspect is weight. An authentic watch, especially if it is mechanical or automatic, tends to be heavier due to the quality of its materials and internal components. If it feels suspiciously light when you hold it, it is most likely not original.
The dial also reveals a lot. Vintage watches often have natural patinas from the passage of time, small marks that, far from detracting from their value, actually increase it, as they demonstrate their authenticity and character. If the dial looks too new or perfect for its age, it may have been replaced or restored in an inaccurate manner.
Finally, check the internal movement. An authentic watch will have a complex, well-assembled mechanism with the brand’s engravings on key parts. Imitations usually have simpler mechanisms without details.
At Rescued Watches, we check each piece in detail, ensuring that all the watches we offer are authentic and in perfect working order. Our mission is not only to sell watches, but to ensure that each customer takes a piece of watchmaking history home with them.
